Christina Santiago, a journalist by day, poet by night—quite literally. In our recent conversation, she revealed her latest project, curating an exhibit titled "The Journey Through" at HJ’s Youth and Community Center in Brookside, Kansas City. Collaborating with visual artist Brittany Noriega, Santiago crafted thirteen poetic pieces that breathed life into the graphite works, offering viewers a deeper lens through which to experience the art.
For her, the words didn’t come immediately. She let the art move her, waiting patiently for that spark. And when it arrived, it did so with a quiet intensity, awakening her creativity in the stillness of the night. This had me wondering—what is it about the night that calls to us? What is it about the moon, hanging low in the sky, that ignites something deep within?
Some say the moon holds a secret power, stirring creativity in the silence it casts. Its glow has long been tied to mystery, dreams, and reflection, luring out the thoughts we tuck away during the day. For artists like Santiago, it’s as if the moon whispers, coaxing out the stories hidden in our hearts when the world has gone to sleep.
"The Journey Through" is a beautiful testament to Santiago’s gift—connecting with viewers by weaving words into the cracks of each moment, illuminating the small details most would overlook. But her connection runs deeper than art alone. She is deeply embedded in her community—serving on the board of her church, attending local writing events, unafraid to show up alone and create meaningful bonds.
“Most people don’t realize that I show up scared,” Santiago confided. That simple statement struck me—one of the biggest takeaways from our conversation. We live in an age where face-to-face connection feels unnatural, but it remains the truest path to authentic relationships. Despite the fear, we must keep showing up. We must remember that vulnerability is the birthplace of real connection.
